John Lennon's favourite hotel Karuizawa "Mampei Hotel" undergoes first large-scale renovation

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

The Manpei Hotel (Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture) is known as the pioneer of Western-style hotels in Japan, and is known for being the place where musician John Lennon (1940-1980), a former member of the Beatles, used to escape the summer heat. will enter its first large-scale renovation in January 2023, and will be closed for a year and a half until the summer of 2024. The reason is the ageing of the building.

Some buildings will be rebuilt, but the Alps Pavilion, where John Lennon stayed, will be repaired while leaving as much of its original form as possible. Manager Shinji Nishikawa said, "This is a project commemorating the hotel's 130th anniversary in 2012. We want to maintain the hotel for the future and meet the expectations of customers who expect hospitality."
