JR East to cut 4,000 railway workers, allocating to in-station stores and real estate business


It was learnt that JR East will cut about 4,000 personnel involved in railway operations. Voluntary retirement will not be solicited, and the personnel saved by expanding "one-man operation" in the Tokyo metropolitan area and reducing the number of manned counters "Midori no Madoguchi" will be allocated to growth areas of non-railway business such as distribution and real estate.

JR East has about 71,000 consolidated employees, of which about 34,000 are in the railway business. The aim is to reduce this to less than 30,000 in the future.
