Manned submarine reaches depth of 9801m Ogasawara Trench breaking Japanese record

Research groups such as Nagoya University and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, which are investigating the "ultra-deep sea" around Japan with a depth of more than 6,000 meters, announced on the 29th that Katsutoshi Dobayashi, a professor at Nagoya University (Earth and Environmental Sciences), was on a manned submersible, Ogasawara. It was announced that it reached the seafloor of 9801m near the deepest part of the trench. The record for the deepest manned voyage by a Japanese man was broken for the first time in 60 years by 256m.

According to Professor Dobayashi, on the 13th, he boarded a small submersible with the famous American adventurer Victor Vescovo, and reached the deepest part in about three and a half hours. He observed the geology, topography, and life on the seafloor through the window, and also filmed videos. The Ogasawara Trench, which is said to be the deepest in Japan, was previously thought to be 9,780m deep, but has been found to be even deeper.
