A survey by the Yomiuri Shimbun found that at least 11 cities in Kyushu and Yamaguchi have been forced to cut off the supply of electricity to public facilities since this spring after local governments contracted with "new electric power companies" that have grown with cheap electricity rates. A total of 209 public facilities, including government buildings and schools, have been cut off. The reason for this is that new electric power companies can no longer withstand the increasing cost of procuring electricity due to soaring global fuel prices. More than 10% of new electric power companies that have run into financial difficulties due to bankruptcies or business withdrawals are likely to continue to be affected.
In August, the Yomiuri Shimbun conducted a survey in Kyushu, Yamaguchi, Okinawa prefectures and all cities. As of January this year, at least 3 prefectures and 58 cities have contracts with the new power company. Since this spring, 11 cities, including Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture and Omuta in Fukuoka Prefecture, have been notified of suspension of electricity supply due to reasons such as bankruptcies and business withdrawals.
